KAPLA: 40 years of playful, universal learning
For almost four decades, KAPLA has established itself as a leading reference in the world of construction play. Invented in 1987 by Tom van der Bruggen, this simple yet revolutionary concept has captivated audiences worldwide thanks to its universality and outstanding educational value. As KAPLA approaches its 40th anniversary, to be celebrated in 2027, the brand continues to embody the same core values: creativity, sustainability, learning and shared enjoyment.
An Inspiring Story, a Lasting Legacy
It all began with a childhood dream: that of Tom van der Bruggen, who, fascinated by castles and construction, one day decided to build one of his own in the south of France. In the late 1960s, when he discovered an abandoned farmhouse near the Tarn, his ambition took shape. To create a scale model of his future castle, he designed small wooden planks with perfectly balanced proportions – three thicknesses for one width, and five widths for one length.
All identical, these planks make it possible to build endlessly, without glue or fixings, relying solely on stacking and balance. KAPLA was therefore born from an architectural project and was not originally intended as a toy. It was only in 1987, some twenty years later, that Tom decided to market his planks to toy shops. The KAPLA brand – a contraction of “kabouter plankjes” (Dutch for “little gnome planks”) – was born.
Made from Landes pine, these planks soon became much more than a game: they evolved into a tool for discovery, creativity and shared experience. Today, KAPLA is present in nearly 50 countries, proving that simplicity and authenticity transcend borders and generations.
A Universal Game, for Everyone and Every Kind of Learning
KAPLA is far more than a simple construction toy. It is a recognised educational resource, used both at home and in schools, by children and adults alike. Its universal principle – identical planks – makes it accessible to everyone, encouraging equal opportunities and cooperation.
In classrooms, KAPLA is highly valued for its role in teaching fundamental concepts such as geometry, physics and technology, as well as fine motor skills, concentration and logical reasoning. From the age of two, children develop dexterity, patience and perseverance by handling the planks. Teachers appreciate KAPLA as a playful way to approach complex ideas in an intuitive and hands-on manner.
KAPLA adapts to all ages and all ability levels. Whether building a simple tower, an ambitious bridge or a replica of a historical monument, every creation is a unique adventure that stimulates imagination and self-confidence.
Timeless Values: Responsibility, Creativity and Sharing
The planks are made from natural wood, sourced from sustainably managed French forests, and designed to last. No plastic, no electronics – just wood and imagination. This philosophy reflects a long-term vision, where play is passed down from generation to generation without ever losing its appeal.
KAPLA also promotes strong human values: cooperation, self-confidence, perseverance and resilience. Whether enjoyed with family, at school or in a professional setting, KAPLA brings people together and creates connections.
KAPLA workshops, run by approved organisations in many schools, cultural centres and companies, offer opportunities for collective creativity, where everyone contributes their plank to the structure – proving that play has no age limit and creativity is a universal language.
